Finally we have a break and we see the season is coming to an end. The temperatures still hover around frigid but the sun is stronger and the days are lighter and we can see winter receding. We thought that it would never come and that the cycle of snow, ice and freezing rain would remain forever. But we see glimmers of spring thaw, we know of course it was coming it just took some time.
March has been brutal and thankfully I am not the only one who has been thinking that. Seasoned Canadians one and all have also been stuck in the funk of winters grind. It has been truly exceptional. But I am taking no chances and snow tires remain....for now. People have warned of snow in April. For now I am enjoying bright blue sky and the dwindling ice and snow.
This truly could be an abstract painting. It is infact the river taken from above outside the gallery where I volunteer and it is all but frozen
Only the edge is free and water flows.
When I came home one day, one of the cars on the drive looked to me like it has sun glasses on. So funny on so many levels!
The ice really is amazing and that things survive and thrive just truly marvels of nature
It is a constantly changing structure
This funny picture shows the boys with an icicle from the edge of the roof. Isaac picked it off and was amazed to see that even handling it, it didn't melt or alter and remained "glass like".
Even in this much cold there is beauty and these mass water droplets on the branches are truly stunning
The ice and snow is continuous but the blue sky makes it bearable
a cascade of ice forming and reforming for weeks on end
This powdery snow was just so light ands fluffy. The snow flakes massive
Perfectly formed
and lightly sticking together, so feathery in the touch, that the other flakes don't loose their shape. Just stunning
This may seem like a rather dull photo. But in fact this is the first sign of spring. This tiny bud on the tree was until days ago the blob of ice that I took earlier! Hello Bud
The snow that fell fluffy and light highlighted the greenery
I can enjoy this snow as I know that it might be the last for the year
The ice is harder to shift
And the really cool thing about this shot is the black/grey section is where the water is coursing through the ice.
Striations of the icicle
just so fascinated with the formation of the ice
It's just a mesmerizing structure
with so many variations. The bubbles are my favorite
SOME TIME LATER like a week
Yes this blurry but it's a spring shot from a moving car, so pleadings for forgiveness to show you the bright red twigs against the brush. So bright after white and black colours of winter
The same as this tree, bright yellow tiny buds.
The river is slowly winning back and the sides are where the water still moves and melts first. Who knew that!
This is the other side of the weir and so no ice here
The river ice is several inches thick and will take longer to thaw. But it's coming
Lovely blue sky
Great flags on the blue
Amazing statue. Really gazing and really seeing. (It is part of a world war 1 memorial in Stratford Ontario. Really very moving and certainly makes to stop wonder and pause)
The thaw is on and just look at that. The water is so high, I think maybe 3 possibly 4 feet deeper than it normally is. No wonder they tell you to keep away from water when it is the melt time
It is such a welcome sight, the disappearing ice and even though the waters are brown, this is spring
Happy Days.....it's here at last
Here is the warm spot and bliss for cats. They haven't suffered this winter at all!
