Early March

I am sure like everyone, your life has gone a little bonkers of late. I was wondering about this and thought that maybe a photo would help cheer us all up a little. At least in a small way, to think of something else, for just a moment.

I normally wait till the end of the month and gather all the photos and select from them. It might be that I don't manage to get many more shots in this month, that said I do have plenty of time on my hands now......

So here is what early March looks like here

That would be a most comfortable cat mid wash. This is Archibald, Archi to everyone else. Quite the chap and very sure of himself. But I like his markings and for a brute of a cat, how sweet are those little back feet side by side! I apologise for cat photo I know that I have done the unthinkable and revealed my allegiance to cats! and not to dogs.

and this is Bella or I should say Isabella, she is a beauty and cutie pie with an obsession with butter! It is a testament of our love for her that she hasn't been locked out for bad behaviour! Properly crafty but look at the tight ball she makes. The only cat ever to actually love having hugs and snuggly too. But boy is she the original 'sneak attack' when there is food about and her brother just looks on nonchalantly, totally not getting into trouble.

Clearly I needed some air and to get out of the house and stop taking pictures of cats! So we went out one evening while Louie was at tap class. The river is still frozen and night is falling. I really like the black outlines of the river and shape of the spooky tree in the middle of the shot
This one is even more inky black and trees doing the line thing. I like the pin points of light through the trees.

How about this for atmosphere and hazy light. The lights reflecting off the iced river

This looks like a impressionist painting but this is fading light and misty air

The shadows and the trees branches reaching are rather fab along with the glowing almost like a fire on the back ground of the shot. Pretty cool.

Then we got weather like this, brisk but blue.

Elora's doors and snow

Next morning literally like this. See how the snow is weighing on the branches of the fir tree. Like huge white hands. It was a wet heavy snow

But really it turned wet and heavy because initially it was light and fluffy and then it fell in a matter of hours and it went like white cement!

Piled high on every branch and twig

The next day we went back to Elora and again the sun came out and we had tea in a tea shop and really felt like maybe spring might come after all

These were the flowers in the shop and I just loved the colour! That's the worst thing about winter, colour goes!

This is Elora's famous Gorge and I've never seen it from this angle. Damian stopped on the bridge as we were leaving and I quickly took this.

Just look at the speed of the water and it is a long, long way down

The drive back with blue sky and white flatness. Really amazing

In town I had spotted a tree with a Maple syrup bucket on. Now that is a real sign of Spring!!!! They won't get much out of it but truly it is the symbol I think and what a wondrous sight!

OOOH witch hazel. Lovely and in my garden.

At the Clay and Glass Gallery where I volunteer, they have just had receipt of this amazing thing. At first I was like" what is the fuss about, it's horrid" then I completely changed my mind, it turns! and is amazing. The twinky bits of glass that catch the light and how the person made it fascinating. he specialises in these cubes, normally much smaller. This is a giant version

That said it does remind me of the red plastic bricks that interlocked that I had as a child....It took them 5 hours to install this beast. The granite is heavy and had to be put on a support beam! So yes heavy. I will try not to trip up and knock into it.

Collecting Louie from school we and came across this building site. We both were impressed with this

That's right, it's a staircase being put in. All in one go. I wanted to stand and stare and if Louie had been younger, I would have had the perfect cover. But I think he gave me this look

He was actually just  as starie as me. But I did take him for ice cream and I thought the decor of the cafe brillant. So he is the excuse but I wanted you to see the fab lights and how they placed them and the art work. Sorry Louie, you look lovely too

I decided that I needed to drive to Stratford and see the river. So we went for an outing. It was so cold but because the sun was out and we are all desperate for Spring, it seemed everyone was there (that was before lock down)

I really loved the shadow cast of the trees onto the frozen river

Just amazing

This was the same river only a couple of days later!!!!

But bright skies too and really massively windy. Look at the flag

Cactus is doing the most splendid show right now. It is really hard to get a good picture of it and show the glory. I am most impressed that a tea drinking cactus is so wonderful (confession, I normally kill plants, so this is a first)

Last weekend I went for a walk in Waterloo, the river was still frozen and I really liked how the icy river reflected the towers. The gold building on the left is a think tank! Cool

Right I know this is quite a boring picture but you have to cut us some slack, spring is here!!!! and this is evidence

And so the snow drops are here

This is winter berry. Lovely coloured leaves and brightest berries

Snow drops are the best.

I spotted some lambs ears

But snow drops are favorite

February blah

There is a word I heard on the radio today that is a Finnish word, Sisu.  It describes the feeling of surviving winter and what it takes to get through that.

(Described on Wikipedia) : Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character.

The guy talking about words and language said that by borrowing words as you might not have the word or anything equivalent in your own language, that by applying it in your speech, you can inhabit that word a bit. Pretty cool stuff. So I am practising Sisu and in fact had many moments of that over the last 4 weeks!

With that in mind here is February for us. Damian and I decided to go to Elora, a nearby town. They are putting in a replacement road bridge and so we got some action shots of the diggers.

Also this is the river that the bridge spans before it drops into a gorge and the piece of rock in the middle of the river had formed some great ice!

In fact all around the river the was ice in bubbly stacks

The mirrored building is part of a mill that has been completely done up to the tune of 27 million or something crazy. I just like the glass reflecting the gorge and the water tumbling down

Forming the most amazing structures

Quite the place!
This is the mill

and this is what I took from the foot bridge and the ice on the surface of the river
These two drips of ice were rather lovely

But while we were there it started to snow and this was what I set out in

By the next morning it was loaded snowscape

and it went on all day

The cat had the right idea

No idea what this is, call it modern portrait

But getting out and about on blue sky days is a must and this Sumac is looking stunning

as are the birch trees

Shadows and light

Really lovely light as it streams through the trees

Zingy green

It is so green. Think that this could be my favorite colour

Snowy mornings and clearing off the drive before school

Another trip to a nearby salvage place after a heavy snow fall

Amazing how the colours of the old building come alive and look at the ice!

This is such a cosy place

A tulip that has fully opened and I just lovely the colours all inside

We made a trip to Toronto and it would seem I still need to take photos of the CN Tower!

This was the theatre roof in Toronto. Exquisite

That's my tulips still flowering days later

Little Red Squirrel having breakfast

OH and more snow clearance before school

My zingy tree holding some snow

This was the other night. Not massive amount of snow to shovel but it needed to be done. So the team went out

Accessed the area

Yup clearing must begin

Wonderful helper

The ice is pretty beautiful and as we haven't has too much this winter, it just looks nice. Last year it was treacherous!

Even an old finished flower from a Hydrangea looks lovely with a snow hat!

I liked the stripy road of snow and asphalt.

This was another evening shovelling that we did along the pavement/sidewalk. Rare for our road to be so quiet

Cosy house though

Recalibrations of the snow bank for more clearing. I think that Louie enjoys this part of it. But you can see how much snow has fallen from the height of the bank and while chipping away at it makes it manageable!

The snow was so blowy

2 nights ago and the snow keeps coming and so off the team goes. This time it is a full compliment

Thank goodness, as it was several inches of snow

Louie calibrations needed

and it just kept up

There is a path under that!

We had quiet a good time and dare I say it, we enjoyed it. Quiet street and team hard at work

I love the shadow of the street lights

The next morning the park was beautiful

I didn't fancy a sit but it is always welcoming to see a bench....it was too cold to hang about

But managed to capture the essence of the beautiful morning

The river frozen and covered in snow

Very lovely and of course need to enjoy that blue sky

Toronto yesterday and just two shots this time

Well maybe

Three! It was cold but fun and we love this old area of the city.

Hurrah for February and it being over!!!!!

Some of us just know how to do Winter and Archi the cat, is certainly one that does it well! He always has a good place to sit.
